Pashto has no modal verbs like the English "can" or "may". Therefore, potential participles are used to represent the modal meaning. They differ from the past participles in the suffix [aáy] ای- :
"can see" - لیدٌلای ← "seen" - لیدٌلَی
Potential participles do not change in gender and number.
Special simple verbs have the following forms of potential participles:
"to do" - کَوٌل → "can do" - کَوٌلای or کْړای
"to become" - کېدٌل → "can become" - کېدای
"to go" - تْلٌل → "can go" - تْلای
"to come" - راتْلٌل → "can come" - راتْلای
"to drive" - بیوٌل → "can drive" - بیولای or بیوای or بُوتلای
"to take away" - وْړٌل → "can take away" - وْړٌلای or وْړای
"to put" - ایښُودٌل → "can put" - ایښُودٌلای or ایښُودای or کېښُووٌلای
Denominative verbs are one word in their potential participle forms:
"to build" - جُوړَوٌل → "can build" - جُوړَوٌلای
"to spend" - تېرَوٌل → "can spend" - تېرَوٌلای
