Potential Participles

Pashto has no modal verbs like the English "can" or "may". Therefore, potential participles are used to represent the modal meaning. They differ from the past participles in the suffix [aáy] ای- :

"can see" - لیدٌلای "seen" - لیدٌلَی

Potential participles do not change in gender and number.

Special simple verbs have the following forms of potential participles:

"to do" - کَوٌل "can do" - کَوٌلای or کْړای

"to become" - کېدٌل "can become" - کېدای

"to go" - تْلٌل "can go" - تْلای

"to come" - راتْلٌل → "can come" - راتْلای

"to drive" - بیوٌل "can drive" - بیولای or بیوای or بُوتلای

"to take away" - وْړٌل → "can take away" - وْړٌلای or وْړای

"to put" - ایښُودٌل "can put" - ایښُودٌلای or ایښُودای or کېښُووٌلای

Denominative verbs are one word in their potential participle forms:

"to build" - جُوړَوٌل "can build" - جُوړَوٌلای

"to spend" - تېرَوٌل → "can spend" - تېرَوٌلای
