Pluperfect

The pluperfect in Dari is similar to the English past perfect and past Indefinite.

The pluperfect is formed from the preterit of the verb بودن "to be" preceded by the past participle of the main verb. The personal endings are added to the past stem of the verb بودن "to be":

1st pers. sing. کرده بودم "I had done"

2nd pers. sing. کرده بودی "you had done"

3rd pers. sing. کرده بود "he (she) had done"

1st pers. pl. کرده بودیم "we had done"

2nd pers. pl. کرده بودید "you had done"

3rd pers. pl. کرده بودند "they had done"

The pluperfect is used in sentences like the following:

"He (she) had gone before we came." قبل از آن که ما آمدیم او رفته بود.

"I went there last year. " من سال گذشته آنجا رفته بودم.

The negative is formed by adding the prefix نه "not" to the past participle of the main verb:

"I had not done" من نکرده بودم

"They had not come" آنها نیامده بودند
