Future

The future in Dari corresponds to the English equivalent of the future. However, the future form in Dari bears a distinct stylistic marking, for example, that belonging to literature and official language.

The future is formed from the present stem of the verb (خواستن (خواه "to want, to desire," which takes the personal endings followed by the short infinitive of the main verb (the infinitive without the last letter ن of the word, which has neither person nor number):

1st pers. sing. خواهم رفت "I shall go"

2nd pers. sing. خواهی رفت " you will go"

3rd pers. sing. خواهد رفت "he (she) will go"

1st pers. pl. خواهیم رفت "we will go"

2nd pers. pl. خواهید رفت "you will go"

3rd pers. pl. خواهند رفت "they will go"

The future can be used in sentences like the following:

"I shall go there next year. "سال آینده من به آنجا خواهم رفت.

"He (she) will achieve good results." او به نتایج خوبی خواهد رسید.

The negative is formed by adding the prefix نه na "not" to the present stem of the verb خواستن "to want, to desire":

"You will not do it." شما آن را نخواهید کرد.

"They will not come here tomorrow." فردا آنها اینجا نخواهند آمد.

As a rule, informal speech uses the other future form, in which the verb خواستن" to want, to desire" has a fixed form - خواهد (pronounced khaat), whereas the main verb is conjugated (personal endings are added to the main verb):

"We will go next week." هفته آینده خواهد رفتیم.

"They will come tomorrow." آنها فردا خواهد آمدند.

The negative is formed by adding the prefix نه na "not" to the خواهد :

"They will not say."آنها نخواهد گفتند.

"We shall not come here."ما اینجا نخواهد آمدیم.

Another commonly used future tense form in informal speech also partially conveys subjunctive meaning.

The pattern of this form is the following: a fixed form - خواهد as the first component, and the main verb in the subjunctive present as the second component (personal endings are added to the subjunctive present of the main verb). The negative is formed by adding the prefix نه na "not" to the خواهد :

"They won't come today" امروز نخواهد بیایند

"It would be so, that…" این طور خواهد شود که

"He (she) won't pay money." او پول را نخواهد بدهد
