Polite phrases

Some Polite phrases should be learned by everyone who wants to deal with Afghan people. If you do not use such expressions, a native speaker will be doubtful of your language competence, no matter how well you speak Dari. All well-mannered people use such phrases in the same situations, but the only point to be mentioned here is that Afghan people use polite phrases extremely often. Afghan people say, "Hello. How are you? What about your health? How are you doing?" to each other every time they meet, no matter if they meet two, five, or ten times a day.

"How do you do?" سلام علیکم

(lit. Peace be upon you Moslem greeting, can also be the answer to the greeting)

"How do you do?" علیکم السلام

(lit. Upon you be peace The answer to the greeting)

"Hello, how do you do?" سلام

"Hello" (lit. Don't be tired.) مانده نباشید

"Good morning" صبح به خیر

"How are you?" چه طور استید؟

"Are you well?" خوب استید؟

"What about your health?" جور استید؟

"Is everything all right?" خیریت است؟

"Is your health good?" صحت شما خوب است؟

"How are you doing?" چه حال دارید؟

"Good-bye" (lit. God be your protector) خدا حافظ

"Good-bye" (lit. In the protection of God) به امان خدا

"Good-night" شب به خیر

"Welcome" خوش آمدید

"Please, you are welcome" بفرمایید

"I request" خواهش میکنم

"Please, you are welcome" مهربانی

"Yes" به چشم چشم

(signifies an intention to comply with a request)

"I congratulate you, congratulations" تبریک می گویم تبریک

(civil holidays)

"My congratulations" عید شما مبارک

(religious lit. Your feast be blessed.)

"Thank you so much" (lit. Your favor is great)لطف شما زیاد

"May I…" (lit. Give me permission to…) اجازه بفرمایید

"Excuse me." ببخشید

" What God wills" انشاالله

"Bravo! Excellent, well done!" ماشاالله

"Praise be to God" الحمدالله

"Glad to see you" چشم ما روشن

(lit. Our eye is bright to express pleasure of seeing someone.)

"We missed you" جای شما خالی

(lit. Your place was empty.)
