Adjectives

In Dari, as in English, adjectives describe nouns or pronouns.

Dari adjectives usually follow the noun they qualify and are linked to it by the Ezafa:

"good book" کتاب خوب

"white cat" پشک سفید

Sometimes, in informal speech only, the adjective can precede the noun:

"a good boy" خوب بچه

"VIP" کلان آدم

Adjectives do not take plural endings:

"pretty girls" دختران مقبول

"large mountains" کوه های بلند

However, when an adjective is used as a noun, it can be plural:

"Beautiful places of the city (lit. City beautifuls)" زیبایان شهر

Adjectives can follow each other by means of the Ezafa or by the conjunction و va (in informal speech pronounced -o-) "and":

"big white ball" توپ سفید کلان

"a beautiful tall house" خانه مقبول و بلند

Adjectives can be expressed as predicates; in this case they do not link to the noun with the Ezafa:

"This girl is beautiful." این دختر زیبا است

"The color is white." رنگ سفید است
