Unlike English, Dari is written from right to left. Remember to read the examples in this grammartutorial from right to left as well.
Pronunciation Note: Neither consonants nor vowels correspond exactly to any English sound. Learners can achieve proper pronunciation only by listening carefully to native speakers and imitating their speech.
Most letters have four variations, which are used according to the position of the letter in the word. These forms are alone (stand-alone), final, medial, and initial. The correct form depends on the placement of the letter within the word. If a letter stands alone, use the alone form. If it appears at the beginning of a word, use the initial form. In the middle of a word, use the medial form, and at the end of a word, use the final form.
Seven letters in the Dari alphabet are not joined to the letters following them:
ا، د، ذ، ر، ز، ژ، و
