Indefinite Pronouns

There are a number of indefinite pronouns in Urdu. The indefinite pronouns کچھ kuch 'something, anything' and کوئی koii 'somebody, anybody' are used for inanimate objects and for animate beings respectively. The pronoun کوئی koii for case but not for number or gender. Its oblique form is کسی kisii.

Both pronouns can also function as attributes of nouns. When used in this way, the pronoun کچھ kujh denotes an indefinite quantity of something and it may be used with both with inanimate and animate nouns:  گھر کچھ kuch ghar 'some houses', لوگ کچھ kuch log 'some people'.

The pronoun کوئی koii used attributively denotes the indefiniteness of an object. This object can be animate and inanimate as well: کوئی آدمی koii aadmii 'some man, any man', کوئی میز koii mez 'some table, any table'.

The indefinite pronoun کئی kaii ''several' is used only as an attribute and has the connotation of 'many'. It is indeclinable and always precedes a plural noun:

کئی گھوڑے

kaii ghoRe 'several horses'

The indefinite pronoun چند chand chand 'several' is used only as an attribute and has the connotation of 'few':

چند گھوڑے

chand ghoRe 'a few horses'

The indefinite pronoun بعض baaz 'several' is used only as an attribute:

بعض گھوڑے

baaz ghoRe 'several horses'
