Demonstrative Pronouns

In Urdu, there are two demonstrative pronouns: یہ yah and وہ vah. Very often, they are pronounced as ye and vo, respectively. They function generally in the same way as the English pronouns 'this' and 'that'. Demonstrative pronouns inflect for case and number. The forms are as follows:

Singular

Plural

Direct

یہ yah 'this'

 یہ yah 'these'

Oblique

اِس is

اِن in

Singular

 Plural

Direct

وہ vah 'that'

 وہ vah 'those'

Oblique

اُس us

 اُن un

Both demonstrative pronouns may also function as third person personal pronouns (he, she, it). The pronoun یہ yah is used when the person or object referred to is nearby, and the pronoun وہ vah is used when the person or object is far away.
