Dari has two demonstrative pronouns: آن "that, it" and این "this." They stand alone and have both singular and plural forms:
"those" آنها -"that" آن
"these" اینها - "this" این
examples:
"that is a pen" آن قلم است
"these are books" اینها کتاب است
(See است in the topic The Verb "to be" as a Linking Verb)
Demonstrative pronouns may also be used as demonstrative adjectives (i.e. to modify a noun), in which case they precede the noun they qualify and are always singular whether they modify a singular or plural noun:
"that house" آن خانه
"this table" این میز
"that ball" آن توپ
"these trees"این درختها
The pronouns آن "that" and این "this" can be strengthened by هم:
"this very day" همین روز
"that very year" همان سال
The demonstratives آن "that" and این "this" can have the forms of چنین or چنان "such, thus, in such a manner":
"he (she) spoke thus" چنین گفت
The pronouns چنین and چنان can also be strengthened by هم with a slight difference in meaning:
"also, too" همچنین
"in the same manner, likewise" همچنان
