The Verb 'to be'

In the present tense, the forms of the verb 'to be' are as follows:

Person

(I) am

 (میں (ھوں (maiN) huuN

(we) are

(ھم (ھیں (ham) haiN

Second



(you) are

(تو (ھے (tuu) hai       



(you) are

( تم (ھو (tum) ho

Third



(he, she, it) is

 (یہ ، وہ (ھے (yah, vah) hai      



(they) are

(یہ ، وہ (ھیں (yah, vah) haiN

In the past tense, the verb 'to be' inflects for number and gender but not for person. The forms are as follows:

Singular: تھا thaa (masculine), تھی thii (feminine).

Plural: تھے the (masculine), تھیں thiiN (feminine).

When the pronoun آپ  aap is used as an honorific personal pronoun, it requires the verb 'to be' in the third person plural:

آپ ھیں

aap haiN 'you (honorific) are'
