The future tense is formed from the verbal stem with a personal ending (see below), followed by the future suffix ﮔ -g- and the ending ﺎ -aa, ے -e, or ی -ii. The personal endings are as follows:
Person |
Singular |
Plural |
First (I) |
uuN |
(we) eN |
Second (you) |
e |
(you) o |
Third (he, she, it) |
e |
(they) eN |
The choice of the ending following the suffix ﮔ -g- depends on the number and gender of the subject. A masculine subject requires the ending ﺎ -aa in the singular and ے -e in the plural. If the subject is feminine, the ending is ی -ii for both the singular and the plural.
The conjugation of the verb 'to run away' in the future tense serves as an example for this tense. (Note: The table below shows only masculine forms.)
Person |
Singular |
Plural |
First |
میں بھاگونگا maiN bhaaguuNgaa 'I will run away' |
ھم بھاگینگے ham bhaageNge 'we will run away' |
Second |
تو بھاگیگا tuu bhaagegaa 'you will run away' |
تم بھاگوگے tum bhaagoge 'you will run away' |
Third |
وہ بھاگیگا vah bhaagegaa 'he will run away' |
وہ بھاگینگے vah bhaageNge 'they will run away' |
When the pronoun آپ aap is used as an honorific personal pronoun, it requires the verb in the third person plural:
آپ بھاگینگے
aap bhaageNge
'you will run away'
The future suffix -g- followed by the ending ﺎ -aa, ے -e, or ی -ii is very often written as a separate word.
بھاگے گا
bhaage gaa
'he will run away'
بھاگو گے
bhaago ge
'you will run away'
Several verbs have irregular future stems.
The verb ھونا honaa 'to be' is conjugated in future as follows. (Note: The table below shows only masculine forms.)
Person |
Singular |
Plural |
First |
میں ھونگا maiN huuNgaa 'I will be' |
ھم ھونگے ham hoNge 'we will be' |
Second |
تو ھوگا tuu hogaa 'you will be' |
تم ھوگے tum hoge 'you will be' |
Third |
وہ ھوگا vah hogaa 'he will be' |
وہ ھونگے vah hoNge 'they will be' |
The future stems of the verbs دینا denaa 'to give' and لینا lenaa 'to take' are د d- and ﺎ l- respectively. For example, the verb دینا denaa has the following future forms:
Person |
Singular |
Plural |
First |
میں دونگا maiN duuNgaa 'I will give' |
ھم دینگے ham deNge 'we will give' |
Second |
تو دیگا tuu degaa 'you will give' |
تم دوگے tum doge 'you will give' |
Third |
وہ دیگا vah degaa 'he will give' |
وہ دینگے vah deNge 'they will give' |
In negative sentences, the negative particle نہیں nahiiN usually precedes the verb:
میں نہیں بھاگونگا
maiN nahiiN bhaaguuNgaa
'I will not run away'
In the future tense, transitive and intransitive verbs both agree with the subject of the sentence in person, number, and gender.
In Urdu, there are also compound future forms called the Future II, the Future Continuous, and the Future Perfect. They are formed in the same way as the Present tense, the Present Continuous tense, and the Perfect tense respectively, except that the verb 'to be' is in the future tense. All these forms express the possibility or probability of an action:
وہ اردو بولتا ھوگا
vah urduu boltaa hogaa
'He probably speaks Urdu'
وہ کام کر رھے ھونگے
vah kaam kar rahe hoNge
'They are probably working'
وہ آئی ھوگی
vah aaii hogii
'She must have come'
