The Preterit with the Prefix به be

Written texts of scientific and historical character widely employ an archaic form of the past tense which uses the prefix به be to denote action in the past (similar to past indefinite tense in English):

"He (she) went" برفت

" They brought." بیاوردند

Note: At the same time, this form is in common use in informal speech in some regions of Afghanistan, Herat in particular:

"Did you take?" بگرفتی؟

"I said" بگفتم
