In Urdu, there are no special markers of comparison degrees. The comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives are both expressed by special constructions.
In the comparative construction, the word سے se (literally 'from') is put after the noun with which the comparison is made. This noun takes the oblique form:
بلی کتے سے چھوٹی ھے
billii kutte se choTii hai
'A cat is smaller than a dog' (literally: 'Cat dog from small is')
میں اپنے بیٹے سے لمبا ھوں
maiN apne beTe se lambaa huuN
'I am taller than my son' (literally: 'I from my own son tall am')
In the construction expressing the superlative degree, the word سے se is put after the pronoun سب sab 'all':
وہ کتا سب سے چھوٹا ھے
vah kuttaa sab se choTaa hai
'That dog is the smallest' (literally: 'That dog from all small is')
یہ رسی سب سے اچھی ھے
yah rassii sab se acchii hai
'This rope is the best' (literally: 'This rope from all good is')
