Korean normally does not indicate gender grammatically, although there are some specific words that have feminine or masculine meanings.
- 딸 [ttal] ("daughter")
- 아들 [adeul] ("son")
The gender is usually understood in the context. However, the word 여자 [yoja] ("woman") is sometimes used to stress the feminine gender.
여학생 [yohakseng] ("female student")
The prefixes "남" [nam] ("masculine", "man") and "여" [yo] ("famine", "woman") can also be used to specify gender.
남동생 ("younger brother")
여동생 ("younger sister")
To specify the sex of animals, the prefixes "수" and "암" are used:
수 [su] - "masculine"
수탉 [sutak] ("rooster"), 수소 [suso] ("bull")
암 [am] - "feminine"
암탉 [amtak] ("hen"), 암소 [amso] ("cow")
