Making Journal Entries
Journal entries let you record time that you spent on language learning outside of {{#tlo}}Transparent Language Online{{/tlo}}{{#rr5}}the CL-150{{/rr5}}. For example, you may choose to track time spent reading foreign books or newspapers, chatting with friends or fellow learners in the target language, watching foreign TV shows, browsing foreign websites, and so on.{{#mobile}} Journal entries will not be available in offline mode.{{/mobile}}{{#tlo}}{{^mobile}} Journal entries may not be available in all versions of the program and are not available for guest accounts.{{/mobile}}{{/tlo}}

Note: In addition to reporting your outside learning time here, you can also add words or phrases that you've learned from other sources to your learned vocab in this program. To do so, {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}} in the Learned Vocab section of the Learning screen.

To make a journal entry:
- Fill in the supporting details for your entry:
- In the Date field, enter the date of the language learning activity you are reporting. You can either type the date in the format mm/dd/yyyy, {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}} the date in the calendar which appears when you click in the field, or select one of the special options which appear next to that calendar (Today, Yesterday, Start of Week, Start of Month, or Start of Year). This field is required.{{#rr5}} Note: If you choose Today or enter the current date, the time reported in this journal entry will count toward the current day's learning goal as well towards any weekly or monthly assigned goal from a reporting group. However, journal entries for past dates will not count toward any goal or requirement. Administrators who run reports on requirement completion will be able to tell how much time was self-reported.{{/rr5}}
- In the Time Spent field, enter the amount of time spent on the language learning activity in the format hh:mm. This field is required.
- In the Source menu, select the option that best describes the source of material you used in the language learning activity that you are reporting. If your source is not listed, you can choose Other. This field is optional.
- In the {{#rr5}}Modality{{/rr5}}{{#tlo}}Skill{{/tlo}} menu, select the skill that you focused on during this language learning activity: Listening, Reading, Speaking, or Writing. This field is optional.
- In the Domain menu, select the category that best matches the subject of the language learning material that you used. If the appropriate subject is not listed, you can choose Other. This field is optional.
- In the ILR menu, select the ILR level of the language learning material that you used. This field is optional.
- Enter the journal entry itself in the Journal entry field. Include as many details as you think are useful about what you did and how it helped your language learning. Entries can be up to 1024 characters long, including spaces. This field is required.

- On the review screen that pops up, read through all the information and make sure it is correct. If so, {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}} Save to save your entry. If not, {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}} Cancel and make your corrections.
You can run journal entry reports to display all of your previous journal entries. The self-reported time from your journal entries will also be included in your total learning time in {{#rr5}}activity{{/rr5}}{{#tlo}}transcript{{/tlo}} reports.
At any time, you can also{{#phone}} tap to check your goal progress, tap to display your notifications, or tap and{{/phone}} do any of the following:
