Making Journal Entries

Journal entries let you record time that you spent on language learning outside of {{#tlo}}Transparent Language Online{{/tlo}}{{#rr5}}the CL-150{{/rr5}}. For example, you may choose to track time spent reading foreign books or newspapers, chatting with friends or fellow learners in the target language, watching foreign TV shows, browsing foreign websites, and so on.{{#mobile}} Journal entries will not be available in offline mode.{{/mobile}}{{#tlo}}{{^mobile}} Journal entries may not be available in all versions of the program and are not available for guest accounts.{{/mobile}}{{/tlo}}

Note: In addition to reporting your outside learning time here, you can also add words or phrases that you've learned from other sources to your learned vocab in this program. To do so, {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}} in the Learned Vocab section of the Learning screen.

To make a journal entry:

Fill in the supporting details for your entry:

In the Date field, enter the date of the language learning activity you are reporting. You can either type the date in the format mm/dd/yyyy, {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}} the date in the calendar which appears when you click in the field, or select one of the special options which appear next to that calendar (Today, Yesterday, Start of Week, Start of Month, or Start of Year). This field is required.{{#rr5}} Note: If you choose Today or enter the current date, the time reported in this journal entry will count toward the current day's learning goal as well towards any weekly or monthly assigned goal from a reporting group. However, journal entries for past dates will not count toward any goal or requirement. Administrators who run reports on requirement completion will be able to tell how much time was self-reported.{{/rr5}}
In the Time Spent field, enter the amount of time spent on the language learning activity in the format hh:mm. This field is required.
In the Source menu, select the option that best describes the source of material you used in the language learning activity that you are reporting. If your source is not listed, you can choose Other. This field is optional.
In the {{#rr5}}Modality{{/rr5}}{{#tlo}}Skill{{/tlo}} menu, select the skill that you focused on during this language learning activity: Listening, Reading, Speaking, or Writing. This field is optional.
In the Domain menu, select the category that best matches the subject of the language learning material that you used. If the appropriate subject is not listed, you can choose Other. This field is optional.
In the ILR menu, select the ILR level of the language learning material that you used. This field is optional.

Enter the journal entry itself in the Journal entry field. Include as many details as you think are useful about what you did and how it helped your language learning. Entries can be up to 1024 characters long, including spaces. This field is required.

On the review screen that pops up, read through all the information and make sure it is correct. If so, {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}} Save to save your entry. If not, {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}} Cancel and make your corrections.

You can run journal entry reports to display all of your previous journal entries. The self-reported time from your journal entries will also be included in your total learning time in {{#rr5}}activity{{/rr5}}{{#tlo}}transcript{{/tlo}} reports.

At any time, you can also{{#phone}} tap to check your goal progress, tap to display your notifications, or tap and{{/phone}} do any of the following:

Select Switch to Desktop Site to display the desktop version of this site instead of the mobile version. Be aware that some features may be difficult to use on a mobile device in this mode.
Select your username in the menu, then do any of the following:{{#tlo}} Select Account Information to view or edit your user profile.{{/tlo}}{{#rr5}} Select Account Information to change your account options.{{/rr5}} Select Change Language to change the learning language. Select App Settings to change settings associated with this app on this device. Select Log Out to log out of the program. (These options may not all be available for all accounts.)

Select Goals in the menu to go to the Goals screen, where you can view information on your daily learning goal, streaks, and shields{{#rr5}}, as well as any weekly or monthly assigned goals set for you by a reporting group administrator{{/rr5}}. Consult Understanding Learning Goals and Streaks{{#rr5}} and Understanding Assigned Goals{{/rr5}} for details.
Select Learned Vocab in the menu to go to the Learned Vocab screen, where you can view and refresh your learned vocab. Consult Managing Learned Vocab for details.

The resources vary by language, but may include language proficiency tests, overviews, alphabet exercises, cultural resources, language learning tips, grammar information, and more. You can also{{#tlo}} use class codes to{{/tlo}} enroll in new classes{{#rr5}}, groups, or Cohorts{{/rr5}} if necessary. Consult Managing Classes{{#rr5}}, Groups, and Cohorts{{/rr5}} for details. Click Reporting in the top navigation bar to run reports. Consult Choosing Reports for details.
Select Practice in the menu to go to the Practice screen, where you can choose activities to work with. Consult Choosing Content for Activities for details.
Select Hands-Free Autoplay in the menu to learn and review vocabulary without the need to interact with the screen. Consult Choosing Content for Hands-Free Autoplay for details. (This option may not be available for all accounts.)

Depending on your language, you may find Facebook communities, X feeds, culture blogs, Word of the Day services, proficiency tests, and more. Consult Using the Resources Screen for details. Tap in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, then select App Settings from the drop-down menu to change settings associated with {{#tlo}}Transparent Language Online{{/tlo}}{{#rr5}}the CL-150{{/rr5}} on this device, such as push notifications. Consult Changing app settings for details.
Click KidSpeak in the top navigation bar, then do either of the following: Select Open KidSpeak to open the KidSpeak application. Select Copy Shareable Link to copy a link to the KidSpeak program that you can share with other Transparent Language Online users. Consult Sharing a KidSpeak Link for details. (KidSpeak is not available for all languages or all versions of the program.)
Click Authoring in the top navigation bar to make or edit your own lessons for use in the CL-150 Learning Application. Consult Authoring Lessons for details. (Authoring may not be available for all accounts.)

Consult the mini goal-tracker in the top navigation bar to check how close you are to completing your daily learning goal{{#rr5}}, as well as any weekly or monthly assigned goals set for you by a reporting group administrator. If you have more than one goal, the tracker will rotate between them{{/rr5}}. Consult Understanding Learning Goals and Streaks{{#rr5}} and Understanding Assigned Goals{{/rr5}} for details.
{{#web}}Click{{/web}}{{^web}}Tap{{/web}} the name of the current language at the top of the screen to change the language you are learning{{#tlo}}, if you have access to more than one language{{/tlo}}.{{#mobile}} In offline mode, only learning languages for which you have already downloaded lessons will appear.{{/mobile}}
Click Mobile Access in the upper right-hand part of the screen to display information on the mobile app associated with this program. (This option may not be available for all accounts.)
If you are logged in as an instructor or an administrator, click Learning Portal in the upper right-hand part of the screen and choose Instructor Portal or Admin Portal to access either of those portals. (These options may not be available for all accounts.)
Click the round flag button in the upper right-hand corner (for example, ) to change the interface language used for buttons, help files, and text on the screen. Note: The flag shown depends on the selected interface, so the appearance of this button varies. This setting does not affect the language you are learning.
Select Learning Language in the menu to change the language you are learning{{#tlo}}, if you have access to more than one language{{/tlo}}.
Click in the upper right-hand part of the screen, then do any of the following: Select Account Information to {{#tlo}}view or edit your user profile{{/tlo}}{{#rr5}}change your account settings{{/rr5}}. Select Update Password to change your password. Select Notification Settings to change which type of notifications you receive. Select Certificates & Tests to download completion certificates. Select Change Language to change the learning language. Select Log Out to log out of the program. (These options may not all be available for all accounts.)
Tap your username in the upper right-hand corner of the screen to {{#tlo}}view and edit your user profile{{/tlo}}{{#rr5}}change your account options{{/rr5}} or log out of the program.{{#tlo}} (In offline mode, profiles can only be viewed, not edited.) If you are using a trial account, the menu under your username will also tell you how many days remain in your trial.{{/tlo}}
Click in the upper right-hand corner of the screen to display your notifications. An indicator will appear beside the icon if new notifications have been added since the last time you checked. Consult Managing Notifications for details.
