Ordinal Numerals

Ordinal numerals in Urdu are formed from cardinal numerals by adding the suffix واں -vaaN:

سات

saat 'seven'

ساتواں

saatvaaN 'the seventh'

دس

das 'ten'

 دسواں

dasvaaN 'the tenth'

انہتر

unhattar 'sixty-nine'

 انہترواں

unhattarvaaN 'the sixty-ninth'

Five ordinal numerals are formed irregularly:

پہلا

pahlaa 'the first'

دوسرا

duusraa 'the second'

تیسرا

tiisraa 'the third'

چوتھا

cauthaa 'the fourth'

چھٹا or چھٹھا

chaTaa or chaThaa 'the sixth'

Urdu ordinal numerals inflect for gender, number, and case in the same way as adjectives that end in ا aa:

گھر پہلا 

pahlaa ghar 'the first house'

پہلے گھر

pahle ghar 'the first houses'

ساتواں گھر

saatvaaN ghar 'the seventh house'

ساتویں گھر کا

saatveN ghar kaa 'of the seventh house'

رسی پہلی

pahlii rassii 'the first rope

رسی کا ساتویں

saatviiN rassii kaa 'of the seventh rope'
