In Urdu, fractions are formed using the special word بٹا baTaa or بٹے baTe. This word is put between the numerator and the denominator:
دو بٹا سات do baTaa saat - 2/7
چار بٹے پانچ caar baTe paaNc - 4/5.
Certain fractions are referred to in special ways:
آدھا aadhaa - 1/2
تہائی tihaaii - 1/3
چوتھائی or cauthaaii پاؤ paao - 1/4
ڈیڑھ DeRh - 1.5
ڈھائی Dhaaii - 2.5.
There are also some words denoting the addition or subtraction of a fraction:
پونے paune - minus 1/4
پونے آٹھ paune aaTh - 8 minus 1/4 i.e. 7 1/2,
سوا savaa - plus 1/4
سوا آٹھsavaa aaTh - 8 plus 1/4 i.e. 8 1/4
ساڑھے saaRhe - plus 1/2
ساڑھے آٹھ saaRhe aaTh - 8 plus 1/2 i.e. 8 ½
