Special Spelling Rules for the Indefinite Suffix

If the indefinite suffix ی is used on a word that ends in ی, an ا or ی is often inserted between the word and the suffix:

"a chair" چوکی ای or چوکی یی

When the indefinite suffix is added to words ending in ا or و, it is written یی or ئی:

"a desert" صحرایی

"a hair" موئی

The two forms are used interchangeably.

When the indefinite suffix is added to words ending in ه or (final a), it is generally written ای:

"a boy" بچه ای

"a house" خانه ای

Note: Words ending in ه (consonant) take the indefinite suffix in the usual way:

"a way" راهی

"a village" دهی

A noun qualified by the interrogative adjective چه "what?" usually takes the indefinite suffix:

"What man?" چه کسی

"What books?" چه کتابهایی
