Demonstrative Pronouns

Demonstrative pronouns can denote a person, a thing, a place, or a direction. Demonstrative pronouns are divided into the groups according to the distance between the speaker and the listener:

  1. Near the speaker
  2. Near the listener
  3. Far from both the speaker and the listener
 

Distance

Near the Speaker

Near the Listener

Far from the Speaker and the Listener

Person

이 "he, she, it"

그 "he, she, it"

저 "he, she, it"

Thing

이것 "this"

그것 "that"

저것 "that"

Place

여기 "here"

거기 "there"

저기 "there"

Direction

이리 "over here"

그리 "over there"

저리 "far over there"

Examples:

이것은 책입니다. "This is a book."

그것은 가방입니다. "That is a bag."

한국식당이 여기에 있습니다. "A Korean restaurant is situated here."
