Subjunctive Mood

The subjunctive mood (النَّصْبُ) is similar to the present indicative. It is formed by deleting ن and changing the finalُ to َ. In the second and third person feminine plural forms, however, there are no changes.

Pronunciation note: The final ا in the second and third person masculine plural forms is not pronounced.

A verb following a subjunctive particle must be in the subjunctive mood. Some subjunctive particles are:

أَنْ لَنْ حَتّى كَيْ

The most common subjunctive particle is أَنْ  .

Examples:

أَدْرُسُ كَيْ أَتَعَلَّمَ
I study in order to learn.

أَدْرُسُ حَتّى أَتَعَلَّم
I study in order to learn.

أُريدُ أَنْ أَذْهَبَ
I want to go.

لَنْ أَذْهَبَ
I will not go.
