Prefixes

A prefix is a letter or series of letters that cannot stand on its own, but which creates a new word when added in front of some word.

Here is a list of common prefixes with their meanings:

a opposite amoral (immoral)
co with coexister (to coexist)
contre against contre-attaquer (counterattack)
de from décharger (to discharge)
in in or un(as a negative) inégal (unequal)
pré before préavis (forewarning)
trans trans, through, across transatlantique (transatlantic)
bi twice bipède (two-footed)
inter between intervenir (to intervene)
post after post-scriptum (postscript)
pré in advance prédire (to forecast)
re again revoir (to see again)
semi half semi-nomade (seminomad)
anti against anticommuniste (anticommunist)
peri around périscope (periscope)
