Degrees Of Comparison

Adjectives in Pashto have no special forms to represent degrees of comparison.

The comparative degree of an adjective is indicated in the following way:

If you compare one object with another object, you must put the first object in the direct case, then put the second object in the indirect case and use the preposition [tAr] تٌر , or the preposition [dA] دٌ and the postposition [tskha] څْخَه , or the preposition [lA] له and the postposition [na] نه. The adjective must be put in the direct case:

دَغَه زَلْمَی تٌر هَغه زَلْمى لْوَړ دۍ

"This man is taller than that man."

In the sentence above, the adjective "tall" - [lwaR] لْوَړ is in the direct case, "that man" is in the indirect case, and the preposition [tAr] تر - [tAr hágha zalmí] تٌر هَغَه زَلْمى is used.

ابی گُل دٌ سْرٌه گُل څْخَه ښایسْتَه دۍ

"The blue flower is more beautiful than the red flower."

In the sentence above, "the red flower" in the indirect case and accompanied by the preposition [dA] دٌ and the postposition [tskha] څْخَه - دُ سَرَه گُل څْخَه is the comparative degree marker in this sentence.

زما کُور ستا لٌه کُور نَه ښٌه دۍ

"My house is better than your house."

In the sentence above, the adjective "good" - [KhA] ښٌه is in the direct case, the expression "your house" is in the indirect case. The preposition [lA] له and the postposition [na] نَه   are used. سْتا لٌه کُور نَه is the comparative degree marker in this sentence.

The superlative degree of an adjective is produced by using the pronoun "all" -[ Tol] ټول in the plural indirect form. One of the following prepositions must be used before the adjective: [tAr] تٌر, [dA] د , or [lA] لٌه . If you use the last two of those prepositions, you must also use the postposition [tskha] څْخَه.

Example: [tAr Tólo] تٌر ټُولُو (variants [dA Tólo tskha] دٌ ټُولُو څْخَه or [lA Tólo tskha] لٌه ټُولُو څْخَه )

زْمُوږ پٌه کٌلى کی زْما نیکٌه تٌر ټُولُو زُوړ دۍ

"My grandfather is the oldest in our village."

دَغَه مَڼَه لٌه ټُولُو څْخَه خْوَږَه دَه
