Derivative Adverbs

This type of adverb is derived from adjectives and nouns. The adverbs are formed with special suffixes that are added to the stem of the adjective or to the noun:

ADJECTIVE (NOUN) STEM + SUFFIX

Suffixes used for the derivation of adverbs from adjectives:

이 많이 "many", "plentifully" (from 많다)

어제 비가 많이 왔다. "It was raining hard yesterday."

히 급히 "quick", "in a hurry" (from 급다)

제 동생은 밥을 급히 먹었어요. "My little brother ate in a hurry."

게 늦게 "late" (from 늦다)

집에 늦게 돌아왔어요. "I came back home late."

Suffixes used for the derivation of adverbs from nouns:

로 ( 으로) 스스로 "of itself", "naturally"

처음으로 "for the first time"

에 나중에 "later"

결국에 "at last"
