Vocative Particles

Vocative particles (أحْرُفُ النِّداءِ) are used before nouns to do the following:

• To call someone or to get someone's attention
• To call for help
• To exclaim
• To lament or express physical pain

The most common vocative particle is يا .

Examples:

يا حَسْرَة alas, what a pity

يا الله O, God
