Managing Learned Vocab
The Learned Vocab screen{{^phone}} is accessible by {{#web}}clicking{{/web}}{{^web}}tapping{{/web}} {{^mobile}}MANAGE{{/mobile}}{{#mobile}}VIEW{{/mobile}} in the LEARNED VOCAB section of the Learning screen. This screen{{/phone}} lets you read all your learned vocab, check the status of individual vocab items, and manage archived terms.{{#web}} Depending on your version of the program, you may be able to add or edit learned vocab items, as well.{{/web}}{{#phone}} Note: All features are available with an Internet connection. They will also be available in offline mode if your data has previously been downloaded.{{/phone}}
To use the Learned Vocab screen:
{{#phone}}- Consult the graphic on the Learned Vocab screen to check how many learned vocab items you have in the current language. You can find the number of fresh, stale, and archived vocab items below the graphic.
- Use the Refresh options to review your learned vocab items. (Note: These options will only appear if you have at least one learned vocab item.) Any stale vocab items that you refresh will become fresh again. Regularly reviewing your learned vocab is an important part of the learning process, so you should refresh often. The following Refresh options are available:
- Tap REFRESH ALL to refresh all your learned vocab items. Stale vocab items will be shown first, if you have any, then you will be given the option of continuing with fresh vocab items if you choose. Archived vocab items will not be shown. {{#web}}Clicking{{/web}}{{^web}}Tapping{{/web}}
beside the REFRESH ALL button and choosing Refresh All Vocab will have the same effect.
- Tap
beside the REFRESH ALL button, then choose Refresh 10 Most Stale to refresh up to ten of your learned vocab items that have been stale the longest. If you have no stale vocab items, you can use this option to refresh the learned vocab items that are closest to becoming stale. Archived vocab items will not be shown. If you have fewer than ten active learned vocab items, this option will allow you to refresh as many as you have.
- Tap
beside the REFRESH ALL button, then choose Refresh 10 Random to refresh up to ten randomly-chosen words or phrases from you learned vocab. These vocab items may be either fresh or stale. Archived vocab items will not be shown. If you have fewer than ten active learned vocab items, this option will allow you to refresh as many as you have.
- Tap
beside the REFRESH ALL button, then choose Refresh Selected Vocab to indicate which learned vocab items that you want to refresh. You can choose as many fresh or stale vocab items from your learned vocab as you want. Consult Selecting learned vocab items for details.
- If the MANAGE button is available in the LEARNED VOCAB heading, tap it to display a list of all your learned vocab items. While the Manage screen is shown, you can do the following:
{{/phone}}
- Consult the table for a list of all your learned vocab. Each row will show the known language and learning language for a vocab item, along with its status as fresh, stale, or archived. You can {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}}
beside any word or phrase with sound to play the sound. (Note: For sign languages, the learning language will be replaced with a link to view a video of the sign.)
- {{#web}}Click{{/web}}{{^web}}Tap{{/web}} anywhere in a row to display more details about a learned vocab item. If the vocab item has hints, a comment, or a transliteration, that information will appear below the text.{{#phone}} If any of the information is truncated, tap Show More to display the complete version.{{/phone}} The
icon will also appear if the vocab item has an image.{{#web}} If a vocab item does not have any of these features, its row will not be clickable.{{/web}}
{{#web}}
- If you need to find a specific learned vocab item or type of vocab item, {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}} any column heading to change how the information in the table is sorted. Alternatively, use the menus and fields above the table as filters to control which vocab items are shown. If you change the setting in any field, the screen will be updated to show only vocab items that meet all of your criteria. The following filter options are available:
- The Status menu allows you to filter learned vocab items based on whether they are fresh, stale, archived, or deleted. By default, this menu will be set to Any (except Deleted), which will show all learned vocab items except those that have been deleted. To limit the display to vocab items with a particular status, you can choose Fresh or Stale, Fresh Only, Stale Only, Archived, or Deleted instead.
- The Has Sound menu allows you to filter learned vocab items based on whether they are missing sound for either of their languages, so that you can archive, delete, or edit them if you prefer not to keep them in your list as they are. (Content from Transparent Language generally includes learning language sound, but may or may not include known language sound. User-created content may or may not contain any sound.) By default, this menu will be set to Doesn't Matter, which will show vocab items whether or not they have any sound. To limit the display to vocab items that are missing one or more types of sound, you can choose No <Learning Language> Sound, No <Known Language> Sound, or No Sound instead. (For information on archiving vocab items, deleting vocab items, or editing vocab items to add sound, continue with these instructions.)
- The Term field allows you to filter learned vocab items based on whether they contain specific text. To use this field,
enter all or part of a word or phrase you want to find, then {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}}
or press the Enter key. Filters are not case-sensitive, but are sensitive to diacritics, accent marks, and other special characters in languages that use them. If necessary, you can {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}}
to display the virtual keyboard to help you type any special characters used in the word or phrase. Use the help button on the keyboard for more detailed typing information.
- The Language menu allows you to indicate the language in which to find the text from the Term field. By default, this menu will be set to Both Languages, which will show any vocab items containing the filter text in either the known language or the learning language. If you want to narrow the filter to a single language, choose the name of that language instead, then make sure that the term you have typed is in the correct language.
{{/web}}
{{#web}}- Do any of the following to manually add or edit learned vocab items, if you prefer:
- {{#web}}Click{{/web}}{{^web}}Tap{{/web}} ADD VOCAB to manually add new learned vocab items. (Most learned vocab items will be added automatically, as you learn them in the program. You only need to manually add an item if you learn it outside of {{#tlo}}Transparent Language Online{{/tlo}}{{#rr5}}the CL-150{{/rr5}} but want to be able to practice and refresh it within this program.) Note: Adding vocab items is best done from a regular computer, not a mobile device. This feature may not be available for all versions of the program.{{#rr5}} If you want to record the time spent learning these new vocab items outside the program, consult Making Journal Entries.{{/rr5}}
- Mark the checkboxes beside one or more vocab items that you want to edit, then {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}} the EDIT link that appears above the table. The editing screen will allow you to add or change text, sound, images, hints, comments, and /or transliterations for vocab items if needed. You can select up to 100 vocab items at a time for editing. If you cannot find the vocab items you want to edit, make sure that the filters over the table are set appropriately. Note: Editing vocab items is best done on a regular computer, not a mobile device. This feature may not be available for all versions of the program.

{{#mobile}}
- To search for specific learned vocab items, use the menus and fields on the screen to enter your search criteria, then {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}}
. The screen will be updated to show only vocab items that meet all of your criteria. The following search options are available:
- The Search term menu allows you to enter all or part of the word or phrase you want to find. Searches are not case-sensitive, but are sensitive to diacritics, accent marks, and other special characters in languages that use them. If necessary, you can {{#web}}click{{/web}}{{^web}}tap{{/web}}
to display the virtual keyboard to help you type any special characters used in the word or phrase.
- The Search in menu allows you to indicate the language of your search term. By default, this menu will be set to Both Languages, which will search both the known language and the learning language. If you want to narrow the search to a single language, choose the name of the known language or the learning language instead. If you choose one of these settings, be sure that the search term you have typed is in the correct language.
- The Status menu allows you to search for learned vocab items based on whether they are fresh, stale, or archived. By default, this menu will be set to Any, which will find vocab items with any status. To limit the search results to a particular status, you can choose Archived, Fresh, or Stale instead. You can use these options along with a search term to find only instances of that term with the selected status, or you can run a search without a search term to find all learned vocab items with the selected status.
- The Sounds menu allows you to search for learned vocab items based on whether they have sound. By default, this menu will be set to All, which will find vocab items whether or not they have any sound. To limit the search results, you can choose No <Learning Language> Sound, No <Known Language> Sound, or No sounds instead. You can use these options along with a search term to find only instances of that term with the selected sound status, or you can run a search without a search term to find all learned vocab items with the selected sound status.

Tap ACTIVE to restore any selected archived vocab items to active status.
