Subjunctive Mood

The subjunctive mood expresses uncertainty, doubt, wishes, suppositions and conditions that are unreal or contrary to fact:

Il est possible que je connaisse cette personne.
(It is possible that I know this person.)

It is used more frequently in French than in English and enables the speaker to express a variety of attitudes through different verb forms and constructions.

The subjunctive normally occurs in dependent clauses introduced by the conjunction que, or another conjunction containing que, or by a relative pronoun (usually qui or que):

Habillez cet enfant avant qu'il parte.
(Dress this child before he leaves.)

Je cherche quelqu'un qui puisse me traduire cette lettre.
(I am looking for someone who can translate this letter for me.)
